Statement on South Dakota from Executive Director, Anthony Papini

The Alliance is encouraged by the news out of South Dakota that House Bill 1107, legislation that would have allowed individuals, businesses, social service agencies to discriminate against people on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in the name of religious freedom. Bills like 1107 are harmful attempts to strip away the achievements made in the LGBTQ movement.

But there is still much more work to be done in South Dakota. House Bill 1008 has been approved by the state legislature and awaits the Governor’s signature. If passed, this bill would ban transgender students from accessing restrooms of their gender identity.  We urge our friends and supporters not to feed into miseducation, fear, and hate. We stand with our LGBTQ community in South Dakota and strongly urge the Governor to veto House Bill 1008!
